Licensing in Maine

Asbestos licensing in Maine

Maine law says no one may do asbestos abatement in the state without a license or certification under its asbestos law. A business that performs abatement must hold an Asbestos Abatement Contractor license from the Department of Environmental Protection, and its workers and supervisors need department certification. The department posts a list of contractors with licenses on record that you can use to check the license on record. Abatement over three linear or three square feet also requires notice to the state. Check the department's site for current requirements.

Lead licensing in Maine

Maine has its own lead program through the Department of Environmental Protection. By law, lead hazards may only be identified by a lead inspector or risk assessor holding a Maine license, and abatement contractors and their crews need a license or certification from the department. Renovation, repair and painting that disturbs old paint falls under EPA's federal Lead-Safe program instead. The department posts listings of lead professionals and abatement contractors. Check the agencies' sites for current requirements.

Radon licensing in Maine

Maine requires radon testers and radon mitigation providers to be registered with the Maine CDC's Radiation Control Program, and testing done during a real estate sale must be performed by a registered tester. The state calls this registration rather than a license. We did not find an online roster, so ask any company for its registration on record. Check the program's site for current requirements.
